Facebook innovates, Google stagnates
Facebook is on a hiring and acquisition spree lately… They’re getting more products out than Google, and are getting ready for an upcoming IPO
This week, they’re having a “Mobile Event” at their HQ, where we can expect anything from a Facebook phone, to more mobile apps that integrate facebook contacts more deeply into your phone contacts. Robert Scoble thinks that a Facebook phone is not in the cards, at least until Facebook improves its mobile apps and integration
Then, there’s the recent news that Facebook has acquired Drop.io. A file sharing site, that allows you to share working files with colleagues and friends in an easy way. I’ve used it several times and love the service. It will be interesting to see what happens when they integrate with Facebook. But make no mistake, this is big news! Facebook is moving more towards group collaboration, as the launch of the new Groups feature revealed a few weeks ago. You now can create documents and collaborate with your contacts.
And that brings us to the big news! Lars Rasmussen, the guy behind Google Wave, has left Google and joined Facebook! This is like… wow! The guy had been one of the most creative guys in Google (imho), and Wave was a testament to that. It failed, true, but mostly because of the overhype Google PR machine. At its core, Google Wave is amazing, and if Lars brings some of it into Facebook chat, groups, document collaboration… the future is looking interesting for Facebook…
Lastly, and to show that Facebook still caters to Farmville fans… Facebook is due to launch a new games portal where casual gamers can find new games and play with their friends. I’m not into that, but it does bring a lot of money in..
So there you go… If I had to put my money on a company right now, Facebook would be it, not Google… What about you, what do you think these moves from Facebook can tell us about where the company is headed?
